The Power of Prayer and Fasting in the Haitian Church
A Tradition of Seeking God
In the Haitian church, prayer and fasting are not occasional practices - they are a way of life. From early morning prayer meetings to extended fasts before major decisions, Haitian Christians understand that some breakthroughs only come through dedicated seeking of God.
Why We Pray
Prayer is the lifeline of the believer. It is how we communicate with God, express our gratitude, lay down our burdens, and seek His guidance. In the Haitian church, prayer is not a quiet, individual activity - it is a communal experience that shakes the walls and moves the heavens.
At Par La Foi, we gather regularly for prayer:
- Sunday services open with corporate prayer
- Wednesday night includes dedicated prayer time
- Special prayer vigils for breakthrough moments
- Individual prayer support for members going through challenges
The Discipline of Fasting
Fasting - abstaining from food for a period of time to focus on prayer - is deeply rooted in Haitian Christian tradition. When the community faces a major challenge or seeks God's direction, the church often calls a corporate fast.
Jesus taught in Matthew 6:16-18 that fasting is not about outward show, but about drawing closer to God. When we deny our physical appetite, we sharpen our spiritual sensitivity.
Types of Fasting
There are several ways to fast:
Complete fast: No food or drink for a set period (usually daylight hours)
Partial fast: Giving up certain types of food, similar to the Daniel Fast
Media fast: Stepping away from screens and entertainment to focus on God
The key is not the method but the heart behind it. Fasting is about creating space for God to speak and move in your life.
Testimonies of Answered Prayer
Throughout our 23 years of ministry, we have seen countless answers to prayer. Healings, restored relationships, financial breakthroughs, immigration victories - when God's people pray and fast, things change.
